“The Buffalo Bills will be without starting running back Marshawn Lynch for the first three games of the upcoming regular-season.
According to a league source, Lynch will receive a three-game suspension from NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell as a result of his arrest in California in February on gun-possession charges. The official announcement could come today.
Lynch pleaded guilty on March 5 to a misdemeanor charge of having a firearm in a vehicle in Los Angeles County Superior Court. He was sentenced to 80 hours of community service and three years of probation. Lynch met with Goodell to discuss his conduct on March 17.
The arrest came after police said they smelled marijuana coming from a parked car that Lynch occupied with two other men in Culver City, Calif. Officers searched the vehicle and found a loaded pistol and four marijuana cigarettes. They did not book any of the men for any drug offenses.
The fact it was Lynch’s second brush with the legal system in two years increased the attention on the incident.
Goodell spoke informally with Lynch about off-field behavior last spring after Lynch was involved in a hit-and-run accident in Buffalo. He wound up pleading guilty to a traffic violation.
The Bills will visit the New England Patriots in the season opener in a nationally televised Monday night game Sept. 14. The next two games of the season have not yet been announced. The full NFL schedule is expected to be released within the next week.
Lynch rushed for 1,036 yards and eight touchdowns last season and went to his first Pro Bowl as an injury replacement.”
