ROUND 2
-
Detroit Lions: Darius Butler, CB, Connecticut
Leigh Bodden was predictably cut, leaving the Lions pretty thin and talent-deprived at corner. Darius Butler could go in the first round, so the Lions would be thrilled to have him at No. 33.Pick change; previously D.J. Moore, CB
-
Kansas City Chiefs: Ron Brace, NT, Boston College
As predicted, the Chiefs are moving to a 3-4 defense. That’s currently a problem because they’re missing all the 3-4 essentials – including a dominating nose tackle. Considering how rare quality nose tackles are, Kansas City can’t pass up on Ron Brace. -
St. Louis Rams: Josh Freeman, QB, Kansas State
In all honestly, if I were running the Rams and Josh Freeman were available at No. 35, I wouldn’t take him. Then again, if I were running the Rams, I’d probably be forced to participate in an annual mini-golfing outing to determine whom to choose come Draft Day.But if Freeman slips by Tampa Bay and the Jets, and no one trades up for him (I think this will happen but I’m not projecting trades), he’ll be a strong option for the Rams.
St. Louis won’t take a quarterback No. 2 overall because it has too much money tied into Marc Bulger. However, using a second-round selection on a signal caller is much more financially reasonable. Besides, it’s not like Bulger is going to be around much longer.
-
Cleveland Browns: Clay Matthews, DE/OLB, USC
I’ve had Shonn Greene going here in my previous few updates, but with weight and off-the-field issues being concerns, I’ve moved him down.Cleveland simply couldn’t get to the quarterback in 2008. The team managed 17 sacks, and no player had more than four. This really needs to change quickly.
Clay Matthews could be the answer. It helps that his father, also named Clay, played for the Browns for 16 years.
-
Seattle Seahawks: Louis Delmas, FS, Western Michigan
Free safety is a huge need for the Seahawks; they can’t afford to have Brian Russell debacling their playoff hopes for yet another year.Pick change; previously Darius Butler, CB
-
Cincinnati Bengals: LeSean McCoy, RB, Pittsburgh
Cedric Benson could be difficult to retain. Thanks to his hot finish, he may be asking for more money than the Bengals are willing to give him. If Benson moves on, Cincinnati will need to acquire a new running back. LeSean McCoy, who has slipped a bit because of the Combine, would be a steal in the second round.Pick change; previously Paul Kruger, DE
-
Jacksonville Jaguars: Jamon Meredith, OT, South Carolina
David Garrard’s interception total has soared from three to 13 in just one year. But don’t blame him. He was knocked down more than any other quarterback this season. And according to the sacks totals allowed by NFL left tackles, Khalif Barnes was one of the league’s worst, surrendering 7.5 sacks.Jacksonville must take care of its franchise quarterback. The team desperately needs to upgrade Garrard’s blind side.
-
Oakland Raiders: Darrius Heyward-Bey, WR, Maryland
I’m cutting out the Al Davis joke I’ve used here in the past few updates. If you want more of Undead Al, however, you can check out the Emmitt on the Brink, where, as of this writing, Undead Al has unleashed Glandor, the ultimate football player. Glandor is 14′10″ and 1,750 pounds, and runs an 0.7 40.Speaking of 40s, you have to believe that Oakland’s new receiver will be proficient in that category. Darrius Heyward-Bey ran a 4.30, so he’ll definitely be on Undead Al’s radar.
-
Green Bay Packers: Clint Sintim, DE/OLB, Virginia
The Packers need another 3-4 rush linebacker to complement Aaron Kampman. The team, already in need of someone else who can get to the quarterback, will take Clint Sintim, a possible late first-round prospect. -
Buffalo Bills: Paul Kruger, DE, Utah
The defensive end the Bills were looking for in Round 1. Once again, Buffalo finished with just 24 sacks on the year, so this is a position that really needs to be addressed.Pick change; previously Max Unger, C
-
San Francisco 49ers: Rashad Johnson, FS, Alabama
Mark Roman, whose contract expires after the 2009 season, has been awful this year at free safety. Perhaps more disappointing is that second-year Dashon Goldson hasn’t been able to leapfrog him on the depth chart.Pick change; previously Louis Delmas, FS
-
Miami Dolphins: Victor Harris, FS/CB, Virginia Tech
Whether it was Jason Allen or Renaldo Hill, the Dolphins had major problems at the free safety position in 2008.Pick change; previously Sean Smith, CB/S
-
New York Giants: Kenny Britt, WR, Rutgers
Well, at least that stupid brown dog didn’t laugh at Plaxico Burress when he shot himself in the foot. It’s clear that the Giants really missed Burress’ massive presence in their 23-11 loss to the Eagles. At 6-4, 215, Kenny Britt is the closest thing to Burress available to the Giants at this juncture. -
Houston Texans: William Moore, SS, Missouri
Well, how about this? Before William Moore had a poor Senior Bowl and saw his stock slip, I had him going to the Texans in the first round. Houston will be thrilled if it can land him here. The Texans’ secondary has been an abomination for years and has always missed a ball-hawking leader. Moore can be that guy.
-
New England Patriots: Connor Barwin, DE/OLB, Cincinnati
More linebacking help for the Patriots. They struggled to put pressure on the quarterback at times (31 sacks) and Mike Vrabel, though still dependable, will be 34 in August. Something has to be done about this.Pick change; previously Victor Harris, CB
-
Denver Broncos: James Laurinaitis, ILB, Ohio State
Considering Denver’s desperate need for linebackers and the fact that James Laurinaitis was considered a strong possibility to go No. 12 a few months ago, Bronco fans should be thrilled if they can land the Ohio State product here.Laurinaitis ran poorly at the 2009 NFL Scouting Combine, so like other Big Ten linebackers before him (Paul Posluszny, Dan Connor), he could really slip on Draft Day.
Pick change; previously Fili Moala, DE/DT
-
Chicago Bears: Phil Loadholt, OT, Oklahoma
I know the Bears just drafted Chris Williams in the first round last year, but they need a bookend tackle. John Tait just retired, so this need is more glaring than it was before. -
Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Robert Ayers, DE, Tennessee
As I wrote in my 2009 NFL Offseason Needs, Gaines Adams finished his second season with just 6.5 sacks. While there’s room for improvement, the concerning thing is that he actually led the team in sacks. Tampa Bay totaled just 29 on the year. It’s clear that they need someone across from Adams.Pick change; previously Derrick Williams, WR
-
Dallas Cowboys: Patrick Chung, SS, Oregon
The Cowboys have to be desperate for help at both safety positions at this point. Roy Williams (both) suck and Ken Hamlin was mainly responsible for those two long runs by the Baltimore running backs. -
Philadelphia Eagles: Herman Johnson, G, LSU
As mentioned in Round 1, Andy Reid loves large offensive linemen. Whatever the reason may be – some argue that he’s insecure about being the only massive man in the room – you have to believe that Reid will draft at least two mammoth linemen in the first three rounds. It looks like the Eagles will need a guard. There are reports that the depression-stricken Shawn Andrews has lost a significant amount of weight and is nowhere near playing shape. Getting a monstrous guard like Duke Robinson would allow Todd Herremans to bounce outside to left tackle.
Pick change; previously Robert Ayers, DE
-
New York Jets: Alphonso Smith, CB, Wake Forest
A few days prior to the Jets-49ers game, I wrote a short column for USA Today’s Sports Weekly, opining that Shaun Hill was a great fantasy start that weekend. My reasoning was that the Jets gave out 240-yard passing performances like candy on Halloween. Hill went on to throw for 285 yards and two touchdowns. That’s one of about 5,000 examples that proves the Jets desperately need corner help. -
Minnesota Vikings: Max Unger, C, Oregon
Matt Birk’s play fell off a bit last year. He’s a 33-year-old free agent, so he may not be back with the team for 2009. If he moves on, the Vikings will be looking for a new center.Pick change; previously Fenuki Tupou, C
-
Atlanta Falcons: Tyrone McKenzie, OLB, South Florida
Assuming the Falcons re-sign Michael Boley, they’ll likely move the talented linebacker over to the weak side. Atlanta consequently will need a dominant strongside linebacker next season. -
Miami Dolphins: Brian Robiskie, WR, Ohio State
Ted Ginn and Davone Bess both have their strengths, but neither wideout is a massive target. At 6-3, 207, Brian Robiskie could be the solid split end Miami was looking for when it signed Ernest Wilford. -
Baltimore Ravens: Mike Mickens, CB, Cincinnati
Baltimore is pretty old at cornerback and could use some fresh legs at the position. The defense’s only weakness is getting beat on the deep ball. Hopefully the addition of Mike Mickens can change that. -
New England Patriots: Andy Levitre, G, Oregon State
The soon-to-be 33-year-old Stephen Neal is in his contract year. If the Patriots wait until next April to obtain a successor, they may have to start a rookie up front. I doubt Bill Belichick wants to do that. -
Carolina Panthers: Evander Hood, DT, Missouri
Carolina missed Kris Jenkins’ presence last year. They’ll take a defensive tackle early in the 2009 NFL Draft if they don’t get one in free agency.Pick change; previously Nate Davis, QB
-
New York Giants: Gerald McRath, OLB, Southern Miss
The Giants need help in their linebacking corps. This season could be Antonio Pierce’s last in New York, while the weakside position is also in need of an upgrade.Pick change; previously Evander Hood, DT
-
Indianapolis Colts: Sen’Derrick Marks, DT, Auburn
Indianapolis’ run defense has to be addressed. Defensive tackle has always been a problem for the Colts, especially after the Ed Johnson marijuana scandal. -
Tennessee Titans: Captain Munnerlyn, CB, South Carolina
Next season will be Nick Harper’s final year on the Titans. Harper is currently 34 years old, so Tennessee will need to find another corner to take his place pretty soon. -
Arizona Cardinals: Donald Brown, RB, Connecticut
The Cardinals were somehow able to run the ball during their unexpected playoff surge, but that doesn’t change the fact that they need an upgrade in the backfield. Edgerrin James’ days in Arizona are numbered, while Tim Hightower does too much dancing around.Pick change; previously Jonathan Luigs, C
-
Pittsburgh Steelers: Fili Moala, DE/DT, USC
The Steelers need a successor for Aaron Smith, who turns 33 in April.Pick change; previously Robert Herman Johnson, G
