ROUND 4

  1. Dallas Cowboys: Vance Walker, DE/DT, Georgia Tech
It looks like it’s going to be really difficult for the Cowboys to re-sign Chris Canty. If so, they’ll need a replacement early in the 2009 NFL Draft.
  2. Kansas City Chiefs: A.Q. Shipley, C, Penn State
More than half of Kansas City’s roster needs to be upgraded. You can include the center position, currently occupied by Rudy Niswanger.

Pick change; previously Eric Wood, C

  3. St. Louis Rams: Michael Hamlin, SS, Clemson
Most NFL players will get to tell their grandchildren about all the glory years as a professional football player. Corey Chavous unfortunately will have to admit that he was benched in favor of Todd Johnson. His grandkids will then laugh at him. Poor Corey.

The point of this is the Rams really need help at strong safety.

Pick change; previously Chip Vaughn, SS

  4. Cleveland Browns: Shonn Greene, RB, Iowa
I seriously think Jamal Lewis could be the slowest person on the planet right now. If he ran the 40 in 13 seconds or more, I wouldn’t be surprised at all. The Browns desperately need a better rushing attack for Brady Quinn.

I think Shonn Greene could fall on Draft Day. Greene didn’t do well at the Combine and there are rumors that he has weight and work ethic issues.

Pick change; previously James Davis, RB

  5. Seattle Seahawks: Alex Magee, DT, Purdue
Free agent Rocky Bernard had nine sacks in 2005, but only 12 sacks in the three years since. The Seahawks really could use an upgrade at defensive tackle.

Pick change; previously David Bruton, FS

  6. Cincinnati Bengals: Phillip Hunt, DE, Houston
The Giants have shown us that it’s all about getting pressure on the quarterback. The Bengals finished the year on a 4-3-1 clip, but they still had major problems pressuring opposing signal callers.

The Bengals signed defensive end Antwan Odom to a $25 million deal this offseason, but in 12 games, he had 26 tackles and three sacks. Guess all of his production in Tennessee was the result of the opposition focusing on Albert Haynesworth and Kyle Vanden Bosch.

Pick change; previously A.Q. Shipley, C

  7. Jacksonville Jaguars: Ricky Jean-Francois, DT, LSU
The Jaguars really missed Marcus Stroud this season, as their run defense fell apart. Unless they go for B.J. Raji at No. 8, look for them to upgrade the defensive tackle position in the middle rounds.

Pick change; previously Chris Baker, DT

  8. Oakland Raiders: Jason Williams, OLB, Western Illinois
Ricky Brown struggled as a first-year starter for the Raiders at strongside linebacker. He’ll be upgraded.

Undead Al will fall in love with Jason Williams. Of all the strongside linebackers available, Williams runs the fastest 40.

  9. Green Bay Packers: Mitch King, DE/DT, Iowa
The Packers will keep collecting players for their new 3-4 system. They need another defensive end to go along with Cullen Jenkins.

Pick change; previously Corvey Irvin, DE/DT

  10. Buffalo Bills: Cecil Newton, C, Tennessee State
The center position is a huge liability and needs to be upgraded if Buffalo wants to improve its interior blocking. Duke Preston didn’t exactly make a great case for himself when he got into a fight at the end of the first half of the New England game, costing his team a field goal opportunity.

Pick change; previously Gerald McRath, OLB

  11. San Francisco 49ers: Sebastian Vollmer, OT, Houston
The 49ers need to upgrade one of their tackle positions this offseason. It’ll be the left side if they decide to move Joe Staley to the right side. If not, they’ll find a right tackle in the draft or free agency.
  12. Houston Texans: Andre Brown, RB, N.C. State
The Texans really could use a power back to complement Steve Slaton.
  13. San Diego Chargers: Kraig Urbik, G, Wisconsin
Kraig Urbik is a steal in the middle of Round 4. He’ll be a nice addition to the Chargers, who need to upgrade the right guard position.
  14. Denver Broncos: Asher Allen, CB, Georgia
The Broncos really need help all over their secondary, especially in the wake of Dre Bly’s release.
  15. New York Jets: Emanuel Cook, SS, South Carolina
The Jets will be looking for a strong safety to play across from Kerry Rhodes this offseason.

Pick change; previously Kevin Ellison, SS

  16. New Orleans Saints: Dannell Ellerbe, ILB, Georgia
If the Saints plan on moving Jonathan Vilma to weakside linebacker, they’ll need to find a new man in the middle.

Pick change; previously Sherod Martin, FS

  17. Dallas Cowboys: Scott McKillop, ILB, Pittsburgh
As mentioned in my 2009 NFL Offseason Needs, Zach Thomas and Kevin Burnett are free agents, but the Cowboys need someone better next to Bradie James anyway.

Pick change; previously Pat White, WR/QB

  18. New Orleans Saints: Lardarius Webb, CB, Nicholls State
The Saints really need depth at corner. I know I have them taking Malcolm Jenkins in the first round, but that’s to fill the free safety slot.

Pick change; previously Keenan Lewis, CB

  19. Chicago Bears: Brandon Gibson, WR, Washington State
The conservative Bears finally take a risk and draft a possession receiver who can play across from Devin Hester, who really improved as the 2008 NFL season progressed.

Pick change; previously Mohamed Massaquoi, WR

  20. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Derrick Williams, WR, Penn State
Wide receiver will once again be a need this offseason. Dexter Jackson was acquired in the second round, but he’s more of a kick returner than anything. Joey Galloway and Ike Hilliard were both just cut, while Antonio Bryant will undoubtedly revert to Sloth Mode once he signs a long-term deal with the team.

Pick change; previously James Casey, TE

  21. Philadelphia Eagles: Shawn Nelson, TE, Southern Miss
Brent Celek looked great against the Cardinals in the NFC Championship Game, so they’ll be targeting another tight end later in the 2009 NFL Draft than they would have earlier.

Pick change; previously Jared Cook, TE

  22. Minnesota Vikings: Terrance Taylor, DT, Michigan
The Vikings need a successor for Pat Williams, who turns 37 in October.

Pick change; previously Brandon Gibson, WR

  23. Baltimore Ravens: Coye Francies, CB, San Jose State
The Ravens need a starting corner and another one for depth; they had major depth issues in the AFC Championship.
  24. New England Patriots: Sherrod Martin, CB/FS, Troy
The Patriots need help at corner, and Sherrod Martin is a steal if they can get him down here.

Pick change; previously Shawn Nelson, TE

  25. Atlanta Falcons: Kevin Ellison, SS, USC
Lawyer Milloy was beaten like a mule on Arizona’s two long touchdown plays. Strong safety is in dire need of an upgrade.

Pick change; previously Sammie Lee Hill, NT

  26. Miami Dolphins: Daniel Holtzclaw, ILB, Eastern Michigan
The Dolphins re-signed Channing Crowder, but they can’t count on him to stay healthy. They’ll need an insurance policy.
  27. Indianapolis Colts: Tyronne Green, G, Auburn
The Colts had problems running the ball last season. They’ll likely add an offensive lineman or two in the middle rounds of the 2009 NFL Draft.
  28. Carolina Panthers: Kevin Ogletree, WR, Virginia
With Muhsin Muhammad, 36 in May, likely playing his final season in Carolina, the Panthers could consider a young possession receiver to team with Steve Smith for the 2010 NFL season.

Pick change; previously Ramses Barden, WR

  29. New York Giants: Morgan Trent, CB, Michigan
If the Giants move Terrell Thomas to free safety, they’ll need some depth at corner.

Pick change; previously Phillip Hunt, DE

  30. Tennessee Titans: Corvey Irvin, DT, Georgia
Assuming the Titans lose Albert “The Hamstring” Haynesworth in free agency, they’ll need to add depth at defensive tackle.

Pick change; previously Ricky Jean-Francois, DT

  31. Arizona Cardinals: Kevin Barnes, CB, Maryland
The Cardinals need help at cornerback; Eric Green and Ralph Brown are free agents, and Rod Hood can be upgraded.
  32. Pittsburgh Steelers: Cornelius Lewis, OT, Tennessee State
You guessed it – even more offensive line help. The Steelers can’t afford Ben Roethlisberger getting knocked around a few dozen times each week.
